- AbstractTwelve genotypes from each of five open-pollinated families of northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) were clonally multiplied by splitting embryos from seeds. Height and stem diameter were measured on all clones over two growing seasons in outdoor planters. Families, and clones from the same family, differed significantly in first- and second-year height and diameter adjusted to the same seed weight. Clone-within-family variance was greater than family variance for first-year height (53% versus 35% of total variance) , while family variance was greater than clone-within-family variance for second-year height (40% versus 35%).
