- AbstractTwo or three dimensional avalanche simulation models offer a wide range of applications; however a challenging model verification process is demanded, accompanied by a reliable determination of model input parameters. It is shown that a verification process can be arranged with remote monitoring data of an artificially triggered avalanche, leading to the calculation of an avalanche mass balance. Two numerical methods are
applied to increase the quality of the parameter fit and to reduce the number of simulations. The quality of the parameter fit is verified by comparing measured and simulated runout lengths. Additionally, a crosscheck is done with velocities derived from Doppler radar measurements. Traditional methods for the estimation of snow depth in release areas of avalanches are compared with TLS retrievals. Remote monitoring data are used to calculate the spatiotemporal evolution of the snowpack. At each grid point of the observation area the snow stability index is derived. The depth of the minimum stability index is compared to the realease depth measured byTLS.
