On the 15th and 16th of July 2008 the final Conference of COST Action E 40 "Innovative utilization and products of large dimensioned timber including the whole forest-wood-chain" was held at the Albert-Ludwig University in Freiburg/Germany. The Symposium was supported by COST as well as by the German ministry for education and research. The overall topic of the Conference was "LARGE DIMENSION TIMBER": OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES FOR PRODUCTION AND MARKETING and many representatives from industry in Germany, Austria and Switzerland were present as well as members of the COST Action from Spain, France, Italy, Czech Republic, Roland, Finland and Norway. Konstantin Frhr. Von Teuffel head of the "Forstliche Versuchs- und Forschungsanstalt Baden-Württemberg (FVA)" began with several interesting ideas and theses, for example that the fast production of valuable and large dimension hardwood as fast as possible will still be the preferred way of production. Prof. Gero Becker from the Institute for forest utilization and work science showed the possibilities for LDT utilisation from the point of customer and processor. The availability of LDT, the usability of beech for the production of glued laminated timber (as long as the moisture content doesn't vary too much) and new harvesting methods were described as well as new ways for a simplified selling process for hardwoods. Prof. Teischinger gave an overview about the results of COST Action E 40 and showed several ideas for future projects and developments.
