The overall goal of this report is to review the currently applied approaches in toxicity and ecotoxicity assessment of novel proteins in the context of genetically modified plants and to identify and discuss possible weaknesses and limitations. This was done by a review of the toxicity and ecotoxicity assessment practice by notifiers, relevant guidance documents and the published literature. Recommendations for possible improvements of toxicity and ecotoxicity assessment in the context of GM crops are discussed.
