- AbstractFrom 2006 to 2008, the second national forest soil inventory will be carried out in Germany. Advanced scientific knowledge, changing political demands as well as new standards required by law requested a new definition of the inventory objectives. Therefore, new aspects were added to the main goals as formulated for the first national forest soil inventory. Those aspects concern (i) the nitrogen Status of forest soils and forest ecosystems, (ii) the potential of forest soils to contribute to the climate change problematic in terms of carbon Sequestration, (iii) the contamination of forest soils with heavy metals and organic pollutants, (iv) the effects of measures carried out to stabilize the forest ecosystems (e.g. liming, close-to-nature forestry). Apart from this, not only the Status of forest soil will be described, but changes of parameters which are closely related to forest ecosystem health can also be monitored. In 2005, the German Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) initiated a literature survey on soil indicators for the second national forest soil inventory (BZE II). The results of this study are presented in this report. In part 1, a Short introduction into the field of environmental indicators and the State of discussion on international and national level is given. In part 2 soil indicators are presented which we consider as suitable within the context of BZE II. The indicators are grouped and presented according to the demands of the Ministry into the thematic aspects (i) soil acidification (status and dynamic), (ii) nitrogen Status of forest ecosystems (incl. changing nitrogen Status), (iii) carbon Sequestration in forest soils, (iv) influences of heavy metals on forest ecosystems, (v) pressures on forest ecosystems caused by persistent organic pollutants, (vi) regeneration potential of forest soils / sustainability of forest soil conditions, (vii) effects of liming. The presentation of the indicators follows a fixed scheme. At first, each indicator is defined and its suitability within the context of BZE II explained. Second, the analytical methods are explained or a relation is made to the national handbook of forest soil analysis (Handbuch Forstliche Analytik, HFA). The next part focuses on the aspect of data availability, taking into account both inventories, the BZE 1 and the BZE II. In the following chapters the potentials and limitations concerning the interpretation and evaluation of the indicator values are discussed and relevant publications are listed. The last part gives an overview of existing sets of criteria, including tables with critical or threshold values.
