Pycnidia, hereafter called "cryptopycnidia". of Brunchorstia pinea, the conidial State of Gremmeniella abietina, are often concealed in the bark of pines attacked by the organism. They are often hard to find, but their disclosure as described herein allows the identification of the pathogen at an early stage of infection. Placed on culture media, conidia from this type of pycnidium yield typical cultures of the pathogen and lead to a quick diagnosis of the fungus.
