During a survey carried out in Lombardy (Ticino Park) for nematodes associated with broad-leaved trees the species Bursaphelenchus fraudulentus Rühm (Goodey) was recovered from wood fragments of Quercus robur L. (penduncolata oak), Carpinus betulus L. (hornbeam) and Fraxinus sp.. Morphobiometric charactes supplemented by scanning electron microscopy observations of two Italian populations from peduncolata oak and hornbeam are hereby reported. ITS-RFLP analysis was also used to characterize the species.
