This Volume of the Transactions of Wessex Institute contains the papers presented at the 4th International Conference on Computer Simulation in Risk Analysis and Hazard Mitigation (RISK 2004) that was held in Rhodes, Greece. The papers cover a wide range of applications of risk analysis and hazard mitigation, ranging from data collection to specific applications. Risk Analysis is of primary importance to planners and researchers, for quantifying the effects associated with both natural and anthropogenic hazards. Effective risk management and the mitigation of possible hazards has become a high priority in modern society. The papers in the Volume are divided into a series of sections dealing with: Siesmic risk; Landslides and slope movements; Floods and drougths; Man-made risk; Emergency response; Data collection and analysis; Estimation of risk; Risk assessment and management; Risk mitigation; Hazard prevention. In addition, three special sessions have been put together by well-known researchers. The first of these deals with Seismic Risk Analysis in the Mediterranean cities and has been organised by Prof. Michele Maugeri of the University of Catania in Italy. The second is on Geomorphic Hazard and Risk by Prof. Thomas Glade of the Friedrich-Wilhelm University in Germany. The last one is on Landslides: from Hazard to Risk Prevention, and is the work of Dr. Andrea Fabbri of the International Institute for Aerospace (SUR) in the Netherlands. These contributions, comprising papers by many renowned international experts greatly enhance the contents of this Volume. The Risk Conference series started in Valencia (1998), and continued in Bologna (2000), and Sintra, Portugal (2002), before the meeting in Rhodes, reported in this book. This continued success will ensure that the meeting is revonvened in 2006. The Editor is grateful to all authors for the papers published in this volume and to the members of the International Scientific Advisory Committee who helped to review them. Their generous help has ensured the high quality of the book.
