The important changes which have occured during the last 20 years worldwide, at regional levels and within each country have lead to political, economical and social answers which can be seen in environmental and forestry legislation. This publication of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations, IUFRO, presents selected contributions from Latin American authors presented at the IV Ibero-Amercian Congress on Forest and Environmental Law which has been organized by the National Forest Corporation of Chile in November 2003. Focusing on the theme "the contribution of law to sustainable forest management and development" 47 authors from 19 Latin American countries provide their vision on different aspects related to the subject. Three contributions deal with general developments in the region and provide comparative elements for assessing the dynamic evolution of law addressing forestry and environmental protectio in Latin America.
