The present publication is a collection of scientific papers covering the comprehensive topic of remote sensing and GIS application for environmental studies. The papers reflect the major outcome of an international conference. The 1st GÖTTINGEN GIS & REMOTE SENSING DAYS (GGRS Days) took place at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen from 07 to 08 October 2004. The conference was hosted by the Institute of Geography and jointly organised with the Institute of Forest Biometrics and Applied Computer Science and the Institute of Forest Management of the University of Göttingen. Overall, 220 researchers, experts, and students from 29 countries attended this meeting and provided a stimulating technical program and vivid discussions by presenting 68 oral papers and more than 80 posters. We were happy to receive a great number of full papers (overall, 90 papers were submitted) that contribute to the major topics of the conference. The proceedings are available in two volumes. One volume focuses on applications in geography and geosciences and the other volume focuses on forestry applications. For reference, both volumes carry the table of contents of each volume. Further to this, the papers of both volumes can be obtained in a digital version (PDF) from the conference website. This service is provided to all conference participants. The papers are reproduced here as submitted but were format edited to fit the required format specifications. The conference committee thanks the authors for their efficient cooperation and hopes that the proceedings volumes may serve as a useful reference for all interested colleagues.
