A major problem in forestry has been to give a good estimate of seed quality in order to find the right time for physiological maturity and cone collection. Different visual parameters (e.g. seed weight and color X-ray studies) have been used to express socalled anatomical maturity. In addition various germination tests on dried seed have been used to find the time of physiological maturity. Such tests are time-consuming and often misleading. In this article is given a review of different methods for estimating anatomical andphysiological maturity of forest seeds, and based on this review an attempt is given to define physiological maturity in seeds.
