Abstract
This study was started in order to overcome difficulties in interpreting humus forming processes in managed Norway spruce forests at Hochwechsel (Austria). The spatial diversity of humus horizons was characterized by micro-site parameters. Humus descriptions were based on morphological and chemical characters, and vegetation relevees. Classification of micro-sites gave 20 types representing different humus building processes which are mainly triggered by micro-site environmental factors and growth strategies of plant species dominating in the understory.
