- AbstractSoils largely sustain global food production which provides more than 95% of the food calories needed by the human population. However, agricultural soils are often charcterized by degradation of their physiocochemical and biological properties in systems based on intensive mineral fertilizer use. Sustainbale management of agricultural systems should include the use of organic amendments and a new generation of fertilizers to establish closed biogeochemical cycles and to foster SOC sequestration and to re-build soil's organic carbon stockes.
