  • Abstract
The survival of pine and spruce seedlings was nearly the same (a. 70% 8-10 growing seasons after planting). The height development of pine was clearly faster than that of spruce. The survival of seedlings was independent of the seedling type. Growing in the plastic greenhouse accelerated the height development of seedlings when compared to those grown unsheltered in the open air. Otherwise the seedling age explained best the height development. Seedlings survived better on prepared than unprepared sites. There were, however, no systematic differences between different site preparation methods in relation to the survival of seedlings. On paludified sites mounding proved superior to other methods. Seedlings grew faster on mounds and plough ridges. Planting in the spring proved somewhat better than that in the autumn, although the difference was not prominent. Planting ages of 6- 7 and 10-11 weeks in less than one-year-old containerized seedlings were slightly better than the other ages.
