  • Abstract
Systematic sampling for the basal area estimation in a poplar stand is far more practical than random sampling. However, unbiased errors of estimation cannot be evaluated. An empirical evaluation of such errors has been carried out for nine poplar stands simulating a number of systematic sampling patterns. Systematic sampling was found to be sometimes more, sometimes less precise than simple random sampling with equal sample units; however, the difference was scarcely relevant even for small samples. Systematic sampling can therefore be a useful tool in inventories. Stratification of the population separating border and internal trees can improve precision without excessively complicating data collection.
