  • Abstract
The series, Trace Metals in the Environment, is aimed at filling a need for a continuous forum to provide the reader with a charted route into the transdisciplinary studies in a rapidly evolving scientific field. Volumes in the series will offer critical evaluations and creative reviews covering all aspects of trace metals and metalloids in the environment, including their natural and anthropogenic sources, their distribution, behavior and fate in air, water and soil. Timely coverages are also expected on (but will not be restricted to) the local, regional and global cycles of trace metals and their disturbance by human activities; the speciation and dynamics of metallic contaminants; mathematical correlations and models; the accumulation of pollutant metals in animal and human food chains; the fundamental principles and mechanisms of toxicity; the biochemistry and symptoms of toxicity in the tissue, the organism and an ecosystem; control measures and technology; legislative agenda and protocols for setting standards; rehabilitation of contaminated ecosystems and the assessment of risks associated with increased metal pollution. Field and laboratory studies will be given equal prominence. Volumes in the series thus will provide integrative and comprehensive accounts of current research on one of the major environmental problems of our time. They should be of interest to graduate students and practising scientists in the fields of toxicology, environmental science and engineering, public health and environmental control.
