Abstract
The interactions between insects and fungi are many and varied, with total dependence of the insect on the fungus as food at one end of the spectrum to total dependence of the fungus on the insect at the other, and incorporating many shades of interdependence in between. This symposium volume attempts to review the current state of our knowledge in four principal areas: mycophagy, mutualism, insect spread of plant fungal disease and insect mycopathology. The invited papers given at this meeting provide the first summary of this fascinating field, the implications of which for ecology, conservation and crop protection are only just becoming apparent. A unique feature of the book is a complete statement of known mycophagous interactions, provided in an appendix as annotated outline classifications of fungi and hexapod arthropods. In these classifications, fungi and insects are also accorded code numbers which are referred to throughout the book to aid the reader in "placing" the unfamiliar name of an organism.
