- AbstractIn this book, the data derived from about one hundred technical articles in the Russian logging periodical, Forest Industry (1947-1952), are brought together to describe briefly recent development in logging mechanization in the USSR. Russia is said to have within its "People's Forest Fund" about one and a half billion acres of timber, with a total volume of nearly twenty-five billion cords (of 85 cu. ft.), conifers representing 85 % of that wood. Almost nine tenths of the timber is in forest areas open for economic expolitation - principally in the north, Siberia and the Far East; the balance, in protective forests. Additional forest area of at least a quarter of a billion acres is outside the People's Forest Fund and the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Forests. The total annual cut in the USSR is now reported to be about a quarter of a billion cords - an increase of 150 % since 1940.
