  • Abstract
The present report gives results of the 1989 forest damage surveys from 27 countries, covering the entire forest area (in 21 countries) or parts thereof (4 countries). The 4 countries having conducted regional surveys in 1989 are: Belgium (in Flanders and Wallonia), Italy (in South Tyrol and Tuscany), the USSR (in Byelorussia, Estonia, the Kaliningrad Region, Lithuania and the Ukraine), and Yugoslavia (in Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro and Herzegovina). In addition, the EC has compiled a transnational study for its 12 member countries, while Canada and the United States have supplied information on the situation in their respective countries. The report has been subdivided into the following chapters: Chapter 2 "Assessment methods" describes the general approach to the assessment of forest damage (methodological details are contained in the ECE Manual). Chapter 3 "Country Reports", describes the special features of national surveys and summarizes the survey results for each country/region. Chapter 4 "Summary and conclusions from the 1988 survey", gives an appraisal of the health of forests in Europe according to the 1989 forest damage survey results and, in essential parts, is identical with the executive summary. Chapter 5 "Outlook and goals for 1990/91" outlines the objectives of further harmonization of survey activites, their extension to countries which have not yet conducted surveys in accordance with the ECE Manual and activities of ad hoc expert panels in charge of investigating and solving special problems.
