  • Abstract
Anatomical-morphological studies can supply important information concerning the geographically distributed genetic variation. The present paper reports results obtained when seven morphological characters of silver fir needles were investigated on material sampled in a 9-year-old provenance trial with 60 provenances located in Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, Austria, Germany, France, Poland, Czechia, and Slovakia. Significant differences among provenances were found in all characters studied. Important clinal patterns of variation with longitude and/or latitude were observed with each character. The resemblances between Romanian and Bulgarian provenances are considered as new evidence of their related origin, possibly in a glacial refugium in the Balkan Peninsula, were the species Abies alba introgressed, to a small or larger extent, with Abies cephalonica.
