Sphaeropsis sapinea could be identified as the main cause of the crown blight of Austrian pine in Eastern Austria. The reason for the outbreak of the epidemic is supposed to be of climatic nature. Heavy rainfall in summer of 1989 and spring of 1990 probably resulted in a high infection level.
