In 1975, Pinus cembra and Pinus mugo were planted at two test sites near the timber line. By 1993, heavy losses were recorded due to Gremmeniella abietina: 77% and 67% of Pinus cembra were lost at Rudolf and Lucksalp, respectively, whereas 38% of Pinus mugo were lost at Rudolf and only 2% at Lucksalp. Pycnospores from both sites had 0 to 8 septa, 3 to 7 septa were abundant with a slight maximum of 3 septate spores independent of the host or site.
