  • Abstract
Recent reviews on the progress of cypress research covered many aspects of pathology, genetics and breeding. National Research Council of Italy (C.N.R.), EC, and Tuscany Region supported and are supporting several research projects to solve practically and scientifically the sanitary problems of cypress. The genetic strategy employed by our Research Centre was based primarily on our findings obtained over the last 20 years: Seiridium cardinale pathogenicity varied only slightly over time within and among isolates; common cypress (Cupressus sempervirens) showed a sufficiently high level of variability in canker resistance. The immediate practical goals were: identification of resistant clones for ornamental purposes; large-scale production of seed which can produce a high percentage of canker resistant seedlings for reforestation. The scientific goals were: studies on the genetic parameters of the resistance (h2, GCA and SCA, genetic gain); on the anatomical and physiological resistance mechanisms; on the stability and the adatpability of the selected clones to different environments. Results obtained and future needs were discussed.
