- AbstractProblems related to the origin and spread of the destructive cypress blight epidemics caused by Seiridium cardinale in North America and in Europe are briefly outlined. Three species of Seiridium: Seiridium cardinale, Seiridium cupressi and Seiridium unicorne are presently associated with canker diseases of cypress trees in the Mediterranean area. Taxonomy of these species has been a matter of controversy and is still debated. Several fungal metabolites, including phytotoxins and plant growth factors appear to be involved in pathogenesis of these diseases.
