  • Abstract
Four species of Lophodermium have now been identified and described on pines, all of which were earlier classed together under the denomination Lophodermium pinastri (Schrad. ex Hook) Chev. (Jones 1935). The species differ in many of their characters, including their pathogenicity: only Lophodermium seditiosum Minter, Stanely P Millar is a serious pathogen, whereas Lophodermium pinastri, Lophodermium conigenum Hilitzer and Lophodermium pini-excelsae Ahamad are merely weak parasites or saprophytes. Lophodermium seditiosum is the causal agent of the needle cast disease occurring on Pinus spp. in all areas where the hosts are present. Lophodermium isolates from Italy have a morphology that is very similar to that described by Minter et al. from other parts of the world. The biology of the fungus and the severity of the disease seem to be strongly influenced by the climatic conditions.
