Oak mistletoe, Loranthus europaeus Jacq., is able to cause decline and premature mortality after long periods of severe attacks. In certain regions mistletoe may play the role of a predisposing or/and additional stress factor among other stress factors and may accelerate and worsen decline due to other causes. Long-term studies on appropriate control measures in Austria have resulted in the application of the mechanical removal of infested branches; this measure has been carried out on a large scale in Austria for a couple of years.
