The aim of the investigation was the development of a method based on modern remote sensing to detect and map forest stands damaged by storms. The forest service should be enabled to use such techniques in future to map quickly and efficiently large forested areas affected by storms. Landsat-TM data have been used and different kinds of image enhancement techniques were tested to optimize visual interpretation of satellite images after a catastrophe by the storm at the end of February 1990. It could be demonstrated that multitemporal satellite images are very useful - even in heterogenous forests like in Middle Europe - for this purpose. Forest areas damaged by storms larger than one hectar can be identified and delinated visually without any problems.
