This paper describes the ways in which the UK Forestry Commission predicts and controls timber yields. It shows how timber production has increased, and is continuing to increase, and discusses the importance of accurately predicting timber yields. It explains how a prodiction forecasting exercise is carried out every five years, outlining the principal inputs to this exercise. The outcome is a production plan, against which actual performance can be monitored. Given the possibility of achieving forecast yields through over- cutting, the paper also describes mechanisms for controlling yield by checking actual production against forecast production within individual sites.
