Damage done by Hylobius abietis and Hylastes species and methods of control are briefly described. The two types of Approval for the useof insecticides which may be issued by the Pesticides Safety Division of MAFF under the Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 and the use of application leaflets' to convey the conditions of "off-label" Approvals are explained. The current status, in terms of Approval, of various possible insecticide products andapplications is detailed. This Note serves as an introduction to "application leaflets" on pre- and post-planting treatments to be issued as further RINs andstresses that these are issued in accordance with the statutory Approvals.
