  • Abstract
Well grown secondary beech forests in Towada, southern Aomori Prefecture, north-eastern Japan were studied with special interests in historical and ecological factors, which caused successful regeneration in the past. Long term pasturage in the forests from 18th century diminished the undergrowth cover, especially Sasa spp., which were strong inhibitor of beech regeneration, and made the forest floor clear. After the seedling banks of beech established well in such a condition, selective or clear logging were conducted. I distinguished two types of secondary forest by DBH- and age-distribution : 1) almost even-aged forest, in which clear logging was conducted after the pasturing, and 2) the forest that showed rather continuous DBH-distribution. In the latter forest, some selective cuttings had been repeated and dense saplings population were ovbserved. These facts shows that the removal of undergrowing plants and gap making (logging) is needed for beach regeneration. The combination of historical studies with ecological analysis is very important and useful to getprecise estimate of the forest establishment process.
