    The important goal for avalanche modelling at the AIATR in Innsbruck is validation of the SAMOS model, which has been developed in cooperation between the private Combusting Machine Research Institute AVL, the Austrian Institute of Torrent and Avalanche Control and the Department of Fluid Dynamics and Heat Transfer at the Technical University of Vienna. There are only two avalanche catchments in existence which conditonally fulfil the requirements of large test sites within the standards of work package 3 of the EC-SAME project. Particularly for obtaining results by artifically released avalanches, there are very strong restrictions in view of the destruction of the protected forest in Austria. Therefore, within the joint field experiments with the SFISAR Switzerland, and the AIATR at the Vallé de la Sionne experimental sites, both Doppler radar measurements and the recalculation of the catastrophic avalanche from the 10 February were carried out by the more-dimensional coupled SAMOS (Snow Avalanche Modelling and Simulation) model. The velocity/speed of the dense flow part and the powder part calculated by the model are compared to the radar measurements (c + k band).
