Since the year 1962 special explosive devices (kind of cable car carrying an explosive charge which can be ignited automatically) have been in use in ski areas to guarantee an effective safeguard against the danger of avalanches. This method was exclusively developed to protect ski runs, it is not applied to the protection of buildings. The method aims at aquick discharge during or shortly after a period of heavy snowfall. Provided that conditions are right, the method achieves a degree of security with almost equals permanent sedurity measures. In the meantime 85 of these devices have been installed in Tyrol. Since 1986 they have also been constructed for the protection of access roads (both in Tyrol and in Vorarlberg). If correctly applied, the method guarantees a considerable decrease of the avalanche risk and has the additional advantage that roads needn't be closed off over longer periods of time.
