Without human influence Austria would be covered by forests at 80-85%. Today's forests - reduced to 46% by anthropogenic pressure since about 1000 years - are formed by human interests furtheron. Without forest management (tending, natural regeneration) forests show lack od vitality, die off or blancs. The alpine living space with all its modern infrastructure is exposed to danger more and more - especially to avalanches coming out of the forests. Interpretation of Color-Infra-Red (CIR) aerial photos enables the user to get the parameters essential for identification of dangerous areas in future: tree species and individual areal distribution, disintegrating stand structures and dying sections, actual blancs, grooves and chutes, a.o. If coordinating all the forest parts disposed to create avalanches with the endangered objects and zones (risk-areas maps) you will get a priority list of forestal and/or technical actions to be done urgently - preventive (on time, cheap) or reconstructiv (late, expensive).
