Alders (Alnus spp.) are ecologically important species owing to fix nitrogen in association with the actinomycete Frankia. There is also little information on the population genetics of perennial angiosperms. For these reasons, we have recently undertaken the genetic study of alder species. This paper describes the infraspecific and interspecific variation observed in this genus, from allozyme and DNA hybridization studies. The strategies currently used to detect variation at the DNA level are also discussed.
