Published reports on conifer inter-population genetic differentiation are reviewed. The commonly used methods for assessing population differentiation are evaluated and compared with new approaches. Sampling strategy and among-species comparisons are discussed. Independent studies within a tree species are compared. The use of multivariate techniques in analyzing isozyme data is reviewed and analytical problems are discussed. Finally, limitations of protein electrophoresis methods are summarized.
