The necessities for yield improvment are discussed on the background of the development of world natural forest resources and population development. Natural forest recources are more and more reduced and world population increases rapidly. The prodction of wood has to be increased. Many arguments are in favour of valuable timber in longer rotation times. Conservation of forest gene resources is urgent. Well adapted, resistant and fast growing valuable material has to bei supplied for application. Since agricultural land can be used for forestry in future and only 50 % of total forests in Germany are regenerated naturally far the majority of forests has to be planted. Selection of populations and bred material with high stability and plantation of mixed forest is necessary to meet future developments including climatical changes. Tree breeding has to procure valuable material and to supply efficient propagation methods. Different concepts to use improved materiala are discussed. The most valuable and highest bred material should be used on abandoned farmlands. On existing forest lands one should differentiate dependent on site quality. The best sites should be used for the most valuable material. For enrichment planting into natural regeneration highly selected material can be used. To meet the future demands cooperations of all disciplines is necessary.
