Abstract
The article deals with the occurrence of the Tetrao urogallus L. in the area along the Austrian border. 91 active and 9 nonactive natural sites of the Tetrao urogallus L. have been established in the studied territory. The number of specimes in the spring 1990 totalled 2.2 Tetrao urogallus L./active natural site on the average. Active natural sites are situated in the high-altitude zone between 750 and 1590 m above the sea level or at the average height of 1244 m. The state of the natural sites in the studied area is a little better that it is in other parts of Slovenia. The real matter of concern is a high share of natural sites endandered through the dying back of forests, which amounts to 27,5 % of all active natural sites. Since the kill of the Tetrao urogallus L. has been prohibited since 1983, the protection strategy is aimed towards the handling of classical causes of the degradation of natural sites. The suggestions as to the protection of natural sites have been defined in this sense as well.
