The article deals with the endangerment of oak species Quercus robur L. and Quercus peraea Liebl. in the territory of Yugoslavia. The decline of the Quercus robur species is most severe in the flat land of Slavonia (Croatia), in the former world-known optimum of this species. The forest decline is primarily due to the changes in soil hydrology caused by stream-flow regulations etc. In the last decade a dramatic decline of the Quercus petraea can be witnessed in the earstern parts of Yugoslavia. The primary reason can most probably be attributed to the general deterioration of forest sites and stands.
