  • Abstract
We tested allozyme markers as a method to determine mating compatibility in interbasidiocarp pairings of Phellinus weirii and Phellinus pini. Electrophoretic analysis of singel-spore isolates revealed three segregating loci for Phellinus weirii and one segregating locus for Phellinus pini. After culture plate pairings of all single spores, interaction zone subcultures were again analyzed electrophoretically for the segregating loci. Dikaryotization (indicative of mating compatibility) was shown by the presence of heteroallelism (multiple bands). Results for Phellinus weirii were largely consistent with a bipolar mating system, while Phellinus pini showed a higher incidence of compatibility than expected.
