Distribution and ecology of intersterility groups of Heterobasidion annosum in Slovenia were investigated. Samples were collected from pure spruce stands, mixed spruce and pine stands and fir stands. The isolates belonged to three intersterility groups of Heterobasidion annosum: S, P and F group. The S group was most frequent in lowland spruce forests established on former agricultural soil and in natural spruce forest in mountainous region. Locally, in mixed spruce and pine forests, the P group was more common. The F group seemed to be restricted to fir forests where it fruited abundantly and caused butt rot in adult stands.
