The intersterility group of 343 specimens or isolates of Heterobasidion annosum from Estonia was determined. The material was collected from 44 spruce and pine stands on old forest soil, from 17 first-generation stands on former agricultural soil and from 1 stand on oil-shale mine area. On former agricultural soil the first-generation spruce was attacked by the S group and pine by the P group, suggesting a high degree of specialization in the ability of S and P type spores to infect spruce and pine. The P type was unexpectedly rare on spruce on forest soils.
