The monoterpene response of wood samples of Abies alba Mill to inoculation with Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. was investigated. After being infected, trees exhibited a change in the monoterpene composition. The reactive tissues showed a significant increase in the percentage of Alpha-pinene and a significant decrease in camphene and Beta-pinene. The promising results obtained in this study make further work warranted. Terpene composition, in combination with other fungistatic compounds, can be very useful as an aid in selecting trees resistant to this fungus.
