  • Abstract
Both actively growing nonsuberized roots and living secondary bark are favourable for studies of structural and biochemical aspects of host-parasite interactions in conifers. Constitutive physical barriers and induced structural and biochemical changes in fine roots, in living bark and wood of spruce and pine have been illustrated in relation to wounding and to infection by Heterobasidion anosum. Living bark contains several phenolic compounds with strongly fungitoxic properties (particularly flavonoids). Synergistic effects between certain compounds were obtained. Comparisons between saprophytic and parasitic wood decayers indicate presence of different elicting properties as to induction of necrosis, lignin and suberin.
