Variation Among Norway Spruce Clones and Heterobasidion annosum Isolates in Greenhouse Inoculations : Root and Butt Rots

Four-year old cuttings of 10 Norway spruce clones were infected under green house conditions with 11 strains of the S intersterility group of Heterobasidion annosum. Incidence of infection was between 98 and 100%. Incidence of mortality was 1.2% during a five week incubation period. Statistically significant differences in length of lesion in the inner bark and growth in sapwood between clones and between fungal strains was detected. Lesion in the inner bark was strongly correlated with growth in sapwood, with above and underground condition of the seedling, but not with plant height and diameter. Growth in sapwood was correlated with root condition but it was not correlated with condition of the shoots, nor with the height or diameter.
