Abstract
Many Central and East European Countries have now been in economic transition for a few years, and most have applied to become members of the EU. The first round of enlargement may be expected to take place between 2003-06. The six applicant countries expect economic and political advantages from their accession, but are also aware of the risks for some sectors of their economy that are unavoidably connected with this decision. Against this background, the European Forest Institute, in cooperation with the Czech Ministry of Agriculture, the Czech University of Agriculture, Faculty of Forestry, and the Czech Forestry and Game Management Research Institute, organised an international conference on the implications of joining the Community on the domestic forest sector. The conference "Forest Policy in the Countries with Economies in Transition - Ready for the European Union?" took place in August 21-23, 1997 in Prague. These proceedings include the conference presentations which focus on the impacts of the enlargement on the forest sector from various points of view, as well as the reports of the panel sessions on subsidies, ecolabelling, forest policy on sustainable forest management and forest information systems.
