Even though English has become the lingua franca of science, it is often useful to be able to understand significant contributions not written in English. The present IUFRO World Series publication Vol. 9-jp compiled by Kenji Naito is an excellent contribution towards improving the understanding at the international level. This volume presents the Japanese definitions of technical terms with reference to the German publication in this series. At the same time, a note is given after the definition, where there are some differences between the definitions in German and Japanese.
