Abstract
Fungi on Plants and Plant Products in the United States provides information that serves four major functions: 1. To provide a comprehensive account of fungi reported on plants and plant products on a state or regional basis, with brief notes on the diseases they cause. Each of the more than 78,000 unique fungus-host combinations is documented by the literature source(s) . 2. To serve as a reference for accepted names of the fungi reported on vascular plant material in the United States. Each of the 13,000 accepted fungal names is listed by its accurate scientific name based on the latest mycological literature. Relevant nomenclatural information is included, specifically, the correct author citation and some widely used synonyms. Additional information inclused the related anamorph or teleomorph (if known), worldwide distribution, diseases caused by the fungus, general host range, relevant taxonomic information, and important literature references about the fungus. The host genera from which the fungus is reported in the United States are listed. 3. To serve as a guide to the literature of fungi on plants and plant products. Over 4,000 articles, books, monographs, and herbarium records are cited by reference number in the Host-Fungus List. Complete citations to these references are presented in the Literature Cited section. 4. To aid in the identification of fungi on plants and plant products in the United States. By surveying a large number of articles and condensing the information in these articles, by presenting this information according to host and by providing supplementary information for each fungus, the authors have created a body of material that will facilitate of fungi. While this publication can be a powerful tool to assist in the identification of these fungi, it cannot substitute for an identification based on direct examination of the relevant morphological features of the fungus. Rossman, A.Y. et al. (1987. A literature Guide for the Identification of Plant Pathogenic Fungi. APS Press, St. Paul Minnesota) provide information on literature useful in the identification of fungi. To facilitate access to the information four indexes are included: 1) an index to the genera and families of the vascular plant hosts; 2) an index to the common names of the vascular plant hosts; 3) an index to all fungal names; 4) a list of authors of fungal taxa and their abbreviations. Specific applications of the information provided by this publication include the following: 1. Agricultural scientists may use this book as a resource in their research programs and training activities. The concise information on the taxonomy and nomenclature of fungi may assist communication among scientists, clarify relationships between groups of fungi, and provide editors with a standardized reference to fungal names. 2. Regulatory agencies may rely on this......
