To examine the behaviour of radionuclides in soils and soil / plant systems many radioecological studies have been conducted with the use of lysimeter facilities. Intensive long-term lysimeter experiments have been carried out in order to study the soil-to-plant transfer, the downward migration and leaching of various radionuclides, and upward migration from simulated buried low level waste repositories. Additionally, based on the experimental results, different models were developed to predict the transfer of radionuclides from soils to plants and their behaviour in soil systems. With the implementation of sequential extraction procedures the association of radionuclides with different soil fractions was also studied.
