  • Abstract
Height growth, mortality, and dry woody biomass were studied on hybrid poplar shoots during their first year after coppicing or during the year of establishment from cuttings. Two coppice treatments (1- and 2-year rotations) and two treatments for cuttings (irrigated or not) were compared. A slight delay was observed in the height growth of cuttings compared to coppice treatments, but total height growth was not significantly different between treatments at the end of the growing season. Irrigation reduced mortality during establishment of cuttings. Total biomass produced was higher inthe coppice stands, due to a greater number of shoots per stool. Coppice maintained its growth capacity even after the fifth 1-year cycle.
