Abstract
The research is intended to improve knowledge on some ecological and silvicultural aspects of European aspen, in one zone of the Eastern Alps. All the groups of this species in the investigated area were identified, and soil and plant stand characteristics (density, composition, structure, provenance and management) were analysed. Confirming the observatins of other authors, data collected has shown that seed propagation of European aspen is difficult while sucker propagation is very effective. Plant health conditions of individuals identified in the commune of Borca di Cadore (Belluno, Italy) are generally sound and dendrological aspects are very good. Thus a larger use and a wider propagation of this tree are suggested. Dendrometrical investigations have pointed out diameter and height increments which are lower than in Appennine stands where European aspen is favoured by better site fertility and by more propitious phytoclimatic zones. European aspen is characterized as a transitory and pioneer tree since it is frugal and has a high ecological amplitude. Its vegetative propagation is easy and it can be used also for a fast revegetation of bare slopes. Finally, some methods are described for the artificial propagation of this species chiefly in north-European countries.
